Brighton's Royal Pavilion
It’s almost impossible to capture, in words or photographs, the joyful exuberance of Brighton’s Royal Pavilion.
It’s a jumble of colours and patterns, shapes and images, and everywhere you look there is more to see – snakes and dragons spiralling up columns, Chinese figures with nodding heads, trompe l’oeil images where sculpture overlays paint or paint masquerades as leather.
As the Prince of Wales, King George IV came to Brighton for a bit of fun – horse-riding, parties, and entertainment with his friends. He started out by renting a small house but gradually expanded it and it became more and more elaborate with a quasi-Indian exterior and a quasi-Chinese interior.
I hope my photographs convey at least a small taste of what the Prince of Wales and his collaborators achieved. If you’re ever in Brighton, be sure to visit.
